-------Plagiarism-------
Introduction:
Plagiarism is a buzzing word in the time of internet and communication technology .
With the development of communication technologies plagiarism has
become a common phenomenon. In developed countries plagiarism is being
protected and measures are being taken to protect it. In developing
countries very few people are concerned about the plagiarism. There have
many tools for detecting the plagiarism. Plagiarism can be a big threat
for students and professionals to build their career.
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism
refers to copying the work of others without giving the credit to the
original workers. Academic plagiarism is copying the academic work of
others. Academic plagiarisms may take many forms. Student copy from the
book directly without citation and copy idea without stating the sources
is plagiarism. Academic works like thesis paper, research paper,
assignment, and dissertation are made from copying different works of
others, if it is done without mentioning the sources then it is
plagiarism. Any work or website which is under copyright can not be
copied without stating the sources otherwise it will be considered as
plagiarism. Teachers/professionals/ students have to mention the
co-workers’ name in their work to avoid the plagiarism. Even students
copy from the peers will also considered as plagiarism.
My Opinion:
I
think plagiarism is the violation of Intellectual Property rights. At
present very few laws are established to protect the plagiarism. The
condition is worse in the developing and underdeveloped countries. As
with the access to internet people getting more sources before them and
the probability of plagiarism is increasing, there should be
international laws of plagiarism. Plagiarism damage the creativity of
students and professionals career.
Penalties in US Institutions [1]:
Like
other part of the world academic plagiarism exist in US institutions.
Plagiarism is not welcoming to any institutions of the world. In US
plagiarism is strongly protested and the involved persons got the
penalties. Both students and professionals are involved in plagiarism.
The following are some example of penalties against plagiarism.
· Princeton University has given Napolitano a punishment by delaying her bachelor's degree for one year as a penalty of plagiarism.
· Northwestern University punished Anthony Lamberis for plagiarism by expelling him.
· Alsabti has lost his license to practice medicine as a punishment of doing plagiarism.
· Paul Haugh has got the suspension from a private high school because of doing plagiarism.

were rescinded as a penalty of plagiarism. They had got the degree from New Mexico State University in 1982 and University of Tennessee in 1990 respectively.
· Sanderson an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee was suspended from the University for doing plagiarism.
Not only the students but also professionals get the penalties for plagiarism like M. Jamil Hanifi who was forced to choose between resigning or being fired.
Avoiding the Plagiarism:
To
avoid the plagiarism in institutions or anywhere else the following
steps can be taken. Firstly, the parties should be aware about the
plagiarism, its forms, and the penalties available for that. Secondly,
Plagiarism detecting tools can be used to detect it. Thirdly, the past
punishments can be communicated to the parties who need to know it.
Tools for Detecting Plagiarism:
In first step to detect the plagiarism the teachers can analyze the work and cross referencing [2].
Electronic Plagiarism Detectors (EPDs) are the very effective tools of
plagiarism detection. It builds massive database of academic works and
websites continuously from the internet [3]. Turnitin.com can be an
example of Electronic Plagiarism Detectors.
Conclusions:
Plagiarism
needs to be protected with strong hand. Though there have many tools of
detecting plagiarism but these tools are not applicable for those
sources which are not in internet. An international campaign need to be
arranged to aware the all parts of the globe.
