Key Skills All Employers Should Want

Author: Darren Hamels

Every employer wants employees that are capable and will be able to contribute to the success of his or her business. Regardless of whether or not a business is involved in manufacturing, working with China manufacturers or any other aspect of business, it is important to have employees that are capable of contributing to the bottom line. Here are a few qualities you can expect any employer to need from his or her respective employees.

Listen, Listen, Listen. While listening may seem like a pretty basic skill to have, many employers find that it can quite difficult to find in their employees. There are numerous reasons for this ranging from short attention spans, a lack of commitment to the job to the simple fact that many people only believe that they are listening when in fact they are not. If one doesn't understand the parameters of a given job or task then it is unlikely that he or she can ever be an effective employee.

Commitment to Success. If you are not committed to the long-term growth and success of the business you are working for, this fact will eventually become apparent. Not all employers expect their employees to be obsessed with their jobs, but at the bare minimum employers want to feel as though their employees are invested in their overall growth.

Responsibility. Responsibility is a base expectation that almost every employer is likely to have for his or her employees. There is little chance that one will find an employer who doesn't really want responsible employees. Even the most "laid-back" employer will want to know that at some basic level his or her employees can be depended upon to show up and get the job done.

Be Proactive. A good employee is one that can foresee problems and avoid them if at all possible. Most employers appreciate having employees that are mentally engaged and are looking to help their businesses grow. A part of growth is to see problems on the horizon and to take steps to avoid them. In this way, employees can demonstrate to their employers that they care and are invested.
